What Are Roses For? (1996)—“Why?” is the question most often asked by children of all ages, and here Stoddard gamely answers a series of such queries in verse, explaining what various things are for—roses, noses, faces, brains, the sun, and so on. In every case the explanation is at least as whimsical as it is practical, as the cycle of questions circles back around to roses once again, concluding that, in fact, “Roses are for roses / Nothing more.” The playful What Are Roses For found Stoddard teaming one more time with Jacqueline Chwast of I Like You fame, who employs a rich watercolor style here.
